How to build a better snack

Pair something with fiber (fruit, vegetables) with something with protein or fat (yogurt, nuts, eggs, cheese). An apple with 15 g of almonds, or carrots with a boiled egg, both stay under 200 kcal and keep you fuller than either alone.

Are nuts too high in calories for a snack?

Not at the right portion. A small handful (about 28 g) of almonds is around 160 kcal. The trick is to portion them out instead of eating from the bag. See how nuts and seeds rank.

What about dark chocolate?

Two squares (20 g) of 70% dark chocolate are about 120 kcal and bring iron and magnesium. It ranks low on nutrient density because of its saturated fat and added sugar, and that is fine for a treat you enjoy in small amounts.
